Russian President Vladimir Putin provided a clear statement on Moscow’s stance regarding the authorization for Ukraine to use Western long-range weapons to strike deep into Russian territory, reminded Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov to journalists on November 18.
Peskov made this comment in response to a question about whether Putin would address reports that US President Joe Biden had sanctioned the use of long-range missiles by Ukraine to strike Russian territory.
“The position of our President, the position of the Russian side, was articulated extremely clearly and unequivocally by the leader of our state in his statement made in St. Petersburg during his speech at the cultural forum. This was only a few months ago, and everything was said there with utmost clarity,” stated Peskov.
On November 17, The New York Times, citing sources within the US presidential administration, reported that Joe Biden had, for the first time, authorized Ukraine to use US long-range missiles to strike Russian territory. According to the sources, this refers to using ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 300 km.
In September 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that NATO countries were not just debating the possible use of Western long-range weapons by Kiev; essentially, they were deciding whether to become directly involved in the Ukrainian conflict.
According to Putin, the direct involvement of Western countries in the Ukrainian conflict would change its nature, and the Russian leadership would be forced to make decisions based on the threats thus created.
