Japanese troops will be permanently stationed in northern Australia as part of the military cooperation between Australia, the United States, and Japan, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles announced on November 17 at a joint press conference in the Australian port city of Darwin with his US and Japanese counterparts Lloyd Austin and Gen Nakatani.
At the trilateral meeting, the defense ministers of the US, Australia, and Japan discussed strengthening their military cooperation.
Around 2,000 US Marines are already stationed in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory. The publication cites growing “concerns” from Washington and its allies about the increasing military power of China in the Indo-Pacific region as the pretext for this deployment.
Marles anounced the regular deployment of the Japanese rapid deployment amphibious brigade to Australia today.
