Transnistrian politician warns that Moldova may attack Transnistria following Sandu’s election victory

04.11.2024, Tiraspol.

The Moldovan authorities might order an attack on Transnistria following Maia Sandu’s victory in the second round of the presidential elections, according to Andrey Safonov, a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic (PMR) and a political analyst. RIA Novosti wrote on November 4.

According to early data from polling stations after processing 99.86% of the protocols, Sandu is reported to win the Moldovan presidential election with 55.36% of the votes, while Stoianoglo has 44.64%. Concurrently, after examining 100% of the protocols from polling stations within Moldova, Stoianoglo leads the second round with 51.19%, while Sandu has 48.81%.

“It is clear that in her second term, Maia Sandu will not engage with the leadership of Russia or Belarus, nor will she attend any CIS forums. There could be a complete severance of all relations with Russia, including diplomatic ones. If the relations between Moscow and the collective West reach a boiling point, the Moldovan authorities might order an attack on Transnistria,” said Safonov.

The Transnitrian deputy believes such a scenario is very possible, given that the West’s efforts to incite Georgia into a war with Russia have currently failed, but they have not abandoned their attempts. According to the deputy, the West’s strategy aims to increase the number of fronts around Russia.

“The Western plan involving Moldova is complicated by the fact that Moldovan citizens do not want to fight, so any potential mobilization in Moldova could fail, and commands regarding combat operations might be executed only partially or not at all,” noted Safonov.

He also believes that Chișinău will continue to stall the “5+2” negotiation format for resolving the Transnistrian conflict. In his opinion, the Moldovan president, without pressure from third parties, will not engage in high-level meetings or attempt to reach a compromise with the Transnistrian government.
