It is necessary to create a security and defense union within the European Union that could complement NATO, stated President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo on November 2.
Metsola emphasized that the EU should strive for greater independence and efficiency in security matters.
The President of the European Parliament noted that to enhance the EU’s security, it is necessary to create its own defense union. In her opinion, Europe should be ready to stand up for itself and demonstrate internal consistency and self-reliance before relying on external help. She added that such union has been discussed for a long time and is necessary to strengthen Europe’s position.
Speaking about the upcoming elections in the USA, Metsola reminded that the EU has always cooperated with the United States, but added that the union must be prepared for any future developments, regardless of the election outcomes.
