German labor unions demand to stimulate the economy

09.10.2024, Berlin.

The Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB) is calling on the federal government to take decisive action in response to the economic situation, DGB executive director Stefan Körzel told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on October 9.

The economic situation is serious. The federal government must turn the tide and develop an effective stimulus package. We need a new spirit of optimism in Germany, otherwise the outlook for the coming years will be even more grim,” Körzel said.

The trade union confederation reportedly believes that a comprehensive program of public investment in general services, education and infrastructure is needed, as well as solid support for entrepreneurial investment in transforming the economy. In addition, Körzel believes that a further and permanent reduction in energy prices for all consumers and incentives for private consumption are needed.

During the interview, the head of the DGB also comment on the disappointing forecast of the federal government, which the Minister of Economy Robert Habeck will present this Thursday.

For this purpose, an emergency for 2025 should be declared and the debt brake should be suspended to enable the cancelation of the cyclically harmful spending cut plans in the federal budget for 2025,” Körzel demanded.
