War correspondent details AI-guided UAV Molniya developed by Russian engineers

The low-budget fixed-wing drone Molniya equipped with a self-guiding system powered by artificial intelligence, developed by Russian engineers, is being actively used on the front lines, stated war correspondent Dmitry Steshin in an article published on October 5 on the website of the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.

“This ultra-cheap yet highly effective tool delivers ammunition over long distances. ‘Molniya’ can carry up to three kilograms,” Steshin said, quoting the UAV unit commander with the call sign Pechorin.

Pechorin explained that Molniya was initially developed by skilled craftsmen in garages, and later the developers received support and government funding. Currently, the UAV is overseen by the company Sudoplatov.

“Unlike enemy makeshift drones, it has a high-tech feature — artificial intelligence in the guidance system,” the unit commander elaborated.

He explained that the aircraft is equipped with a self-guiding head with a compact computer that analyzes images from the camera and can track the target even if the connection with the operator is lost.

“You lock onto the target and switch to self-guidance mode. That’s it, no more need to transmit control commands to the aircraft; the head corrects everything on its own. The enemy’s electronic warfare is powerless against it,” Pechorin emphasized.
