US envoy expresses concern over unilateral actions in Libya

25.09.2024, Tripoli.

The US Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland expressed concern over recent unilateral actions in Libya, the Libya Observer, an online Libyan newspaper based in Tripoli, reported on September 23.

According to Norland, the unilateral actions of the Presidential Council in Libya to remove the head of the Central Bank of Libya from office, and the subsequent retaliatory actions of the authorities in the east of the country to close oil fields and ports are reasons for concern.

Norland believes that it is necessary to focus on resolving the crisis around the Central Bank of Libya, which affects the economic and political situation in the country. He called on all Libyan political figures to participate in a new and large-scale dialogue aimed at reaching compromise solutions that meet the interests of Libya.

Washington, according to Norland, is working on a new strategy to prevent violence and strengthen stability in Libya.

On August 17, 2024, the Libyan Presidential Council announced that it had decided to remove Libya’s Central Bank Governor Sadiq al-Kabir from office. The Presidential Council stated that this decision was made unanimously by all its members as part of the national responsibility to preserve the country’s resources and prevent any damage to them.

The country’s alternative government blocked all oil fields in Libya to protest the decision of the Libyan Presidential Council. The Libyan Parliament supported the government’s decision to block Libya’s ports and oil fields.

In 2011, the US initiated a NATO military operation in Libya under the pretext of protecting the Libyan people from Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. As a result, Muammar Gaddafi was removed from power, but the country plunged into chaos and a series of civil wars.
