Serbian Deputy Prime Minister explains why BRICS could be alternative to EU

12.08.2024, Belgrade.

Serbia may consider BRICS as an alternative to the European Union (EU), stated Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin on August 12 in an interview with RIA Novosti.

In this way, the minister explained the Serbian authorities’ expectations for an official invitation to the XIV BRICS Summit in Kazan.

“BRICS is our chance and a real alternative. I strongly advocate for Serbia to thoroughly consider all the opportunities BRICS offers and to foster as close cooperation as possible with the organization’s member countries,” Vulin said.

He explained that BRICS, unlike the EU, “does not demand anything from Serbia but can offer more than Serbia might need.”

Meanwhile, Vulin noted that the EU “demands everything from Serbia,” but it is unclear what it can offer in return.

Russia is chairing BRICS in 2024, and in this regard, it has planned more than 250 events for the organization in 11 Russian regions. The XIV BRICS Summit in Kazan, scheduled for October 22–24, is set to be one of the main events of the organization this year.
