Hamas denies rumors of choosing a new head of its Political Bureau

02.08.2024, Gaza.

Reports of Khaled Mashal being appointed as the new head of Hamas’ political bureau are incorrect, said Hamas’ spokesperson Basem Naim, on August 2, RIA Novosti informs.

“There is nothing new in the internal work of the Hamas movement,” Naim stated.

A source within the movement’s leadership said it denies information about the appointment of a successor to the head of the political bureau. First, the Consultative Council of the movement must meet, and then elections will be held.

Only after this will the movement officially announce the name of the new head of the political bureau.

On the morning of August 2, Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs named Mashal as the acting head of Hamas’ political bureau.

The movement itself has not yet made official statements regarding the successor to the assassinated Ismail Haniyeh. Currently, Mashal heads Hamas’ political bureau abroad and is considered one of the founders of the movement.

Haniyeh was killed in his residence in Tehran, where he had arrived to attend the inauguration of the Iranian president. He was considered one of the most moderate leaders of Hamas, negotiating a truce in the Gaza Strip.
