Malaysia has sent an application letter to Russia to join BRICS, the country’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on social network X on July 28.

Malaysia recently sent a letter of application to Russia as chair of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) intergovernmental organization,” he wrote, commenting on a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

We addressed aspects of strengthening bilateral cooperation and Malaysia insisted that existing relations should be expanded and strengthened, especially in the areas of investment and trade, science and technology, agriculture, defense and armed forces, education and tourism and culture,” the Malaysian prime minister stressed.

He noted that the issue of Palestine was also touched upon and “both countries stressed the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire, immediate humanitarian assistance and recognition of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations (UN).” “On Ukraine, Malaysia calls for dialogue and discussions as a way out of this conflict,” the Malaysian Prime Minister emphasized.

Russia has accepted the BRICS chairmanship from January 1, 2024. In addition, the organization’s membership increased by 5 participants – they are Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia.
