ASEAN expresses interest in the idea of a new security architecture in Eurasia

27.07.2024, Vientiane.

The countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) showed interest in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative on an indivisible and equal Eurasian security system, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on July 27 following the Russia-ASEAN meeting and the ministerial meeting of the ASEAN summit countries in Vientiane.

“The West still promotes narrower formats with a blatant goal, it does not hide it – to contain China and Russia. Our ASEAN partners understand this perfectly well and have shown interest in the initiative of [Russian] President Putin, which I have already mentioned, of a Eurasian security system that would be indivisible and equal,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov said that the need to develop a single and indivisible security system open to all countries has been discussed at the association’s meetings, citing organizations such as the SCO and the EAEU as examples.

The West plans to hold a meeting of the defense ministers of Japan, South Korea, and the United States, which US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called “historic.” According to him, the United States has recently strengthened its position in the Indo-Pacific region significantly.

At the last NATO summit in Washington, it was stated that the main threat to NATO is mutually reinforcing cooperation between Russia and China, as well as strengthening ties of all authoritarian countries, which included Russia, North Korea, China and Iran. To counter them, leaders of countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea were invited to the NATO summit.
