Greece shows its anti-drone system in combat

08.07.2024, Athens.

The Greek anti-drone system Centaur on the frigate Psara confirmed its effectiveness against the drones of the Houthis, Kathimerini wrote on July 7, citing its own sources.

According to the publication, at around 3 a.m. on July 7, the frigate discovered that four aerial targets were approaching a Cypriot commercial vessel that the Psara was escorting. An anti-drone system developed by Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAV) detected the drones 30 kilometers away, before they even appeared on radar.

The first drone was hit by the EAV using communication and GPS jamming. A few seconds after both types of jamming, the drone was in the sea. Kathimerini writes that the second drone was hit by a cluster-charge missile.

The other two drones came within range of the electronic warfare system but managed to change course and withdraw.

It is emphasized that this is Psara’s first participation in the European Aspides mission in the Red Sea. It is also emphasized that, as in the previous incident with the frigate Hydra, it was not necessary to use ESSM missiles, which are several times more expensive than drones, to counter the drones.

The frigate was equipped with an advanced version of the anti-drone system. It was sent to the Red Sea by the Greek military leadership because this version was not installed on the Greek frigate Hydra, which was already there, due to time constraints.
