The leaders of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso signed a charter to establish a confederation of the Sahel Alliance of States, RIA Novosti wrote on July 6.
At the summit in Niger’s capital Niamey, the document was signed by the Interim President of Mali, Colonel Assimi Goïta, President of Niger’s National Council for the Protection of the Homeland, Brigadier General Abderahmane Tchiani, and the Interim President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
The aim of the new union is to create an “architecture of collective defense and mutual assistance.” In the event of an attack on one of the member states, it will be considered an attack on the alliance and the other members will be obliged to provide, among other things, military assistance.
Earlier in January 2024, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This decision was taken by the new authorities of the states because of the sanctions imposed by the organization after the military coups in these countries.
