The governments of Norway, Sweden and Finland agreed on creating a military transport corridor that will pass through the northern territories of these countries. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced this after meetings with his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Barents Observer wrote on June 20.
The agreement was reached at a meeting of the leaders of the three countries held on June 19-20 in the Norwegian town of Bodø.
The purpose of the corridor is to facilitate the transfer of military and equipment between the three countries.
As Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated, “This will allow the rapid transfer of troops and equipment from Norwegian ports via Sweden and Finland.”
The creation of the corridor comes amid deteriorating relations between Russia and the West, as well as increased NATO military activity in the Nordic region.
The new corridor is expected to simplify logistics for the alliance’s military and increase its capabilities in the event of a conflict.
