Russian ambassador: Paris continues to evade the issue of recruitment of mercenaries in Ukrainian armed units in France

08.02.2024, Paris.

Paris continues to evade answering the question about the legality of the open recruitment of mercenaries in the Ukrainian armed units by the Ukrainian embassy in France, Russian Federation Ambassador to France Aleksey Meshkov said, RIA Novosti wrote on February 8.

The ambassador emphasized that the Ukrainian embassy continues the open recruitment of Frenchmen into the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces, while mercenarism is prohibited in France. Information about this was posted on the diplomatic mission’s website and on social networks.

The Ukrainian embassy invites people to sign up for the so-called “legion of volunteers” and fight for Ukraine. The messages are accompanied by a long questionnaire that specifies what a potential candidate should be able to do.

“I asked the French twice: how does this fit in with your legislation on mercenarism?” Meshkov noted. He did not receive any answers.

The French Foreign Ministry has shrugged off any questions regarding compatriots fighting in the ranks of Ukrainian units. The defense minister said that Paris could not ban Frenchmen not affiliated with the armed forces from going to Ukraine.
