Macron says EU can support Ukraine even without US help

21.12.2023, Paris.

The European Union has failed in its attempts to contain Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron said on France 5 TV channel on December 20.

He said that Europe had “not been very successful” in containing Russia and that attempts to “put pressure” on Moscow had failed.

At the same time, the politician emphasized that support for Ukraine is one of the main issues next year. According to Macron, the EU can help Kiev without the involvement of the USA.

The price of the issue is European security, so “even if the Americans decide to change their position, it is a question of Europe’s sovereignty and ability to choose its own future,” the French president emphasized.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his press conference on December 14 that his French counterpart had cut off communication himself, although they had “good working relations” before that. He noted that Russia was ready to resume its relations with France, but did not see a similar desire in return.

On December 15, Macron announced his readiness to resume communication with the Russian President.
