US State Department sees Poland as new leader of European Union

21.12.2023, Warsaw.

Poland should become the new leader of the European Union, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien told Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita on December 21.

Washington “very much wants Poland to be a leader in the European Union,” O’Brien said.

The US official added that the United States and Poland cooperate closely in the military sphere. Within NATO, Warsaw spends much more on its military budget than its other members.

Washington also seeks to strengthen the alliance’s eastern flag. To that end, it has developed a regional defense plan that “is being implemented better and better every month,” O’Brien added.

Earlier, the USA and Poland signed an agreement on a $2 billion loan to Warsaw, which will be spent on defense modernization.
