Zakharova suggests that the EU may need a nuclear Ukraine

04.10.2023, Moscow.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova voiced the assumption that the EU may need to arm Ukraine with nuclear weapons on October 4 on the air of Sputnik radio.

According to her, the absence of the EU’s reaction to Zelensky’s statements about the need to obtain nuclear status may indicate such a possibility. Zakharova described this state of affairs as atheatre of the absurd.”

“Given that people like (German Foreign Minister) Annalena Baerbock are in power in the EU countries, I do not rule out that in this theater of the absurd, they will also need a nuclear Ukraine. I mean, that’s what they’ve been talking about. Or at least they didn’t restrain Zelensky when he said such a stupid thing at the Munich conference,” she said.

Last February, at the Munich Security Conference, Vladimir Zelenskiy said that the Budapest memorandum of 1994, which envisages a nuclear-free status for Ukraine, could be recognized as invalid. Also, speaking at the UN General Assembly in September this year, he said that Russia had no right to possess nuclear weapons and that Ukraine had once renounced the world’s third most powerful nuclear potential. Similar statements were repeatedly made by other Kiev officials. In particular, there have been proposals to create a “dirty bomb.”
