Usage of Leopard tanks in Ukraine deals a blow to Rheinmetall’s reputation

30.08.2023, Moscow.

German concern Rheinmetall, which produces Leopard 2 tanks, has lost its status as a “wonder weapon” manufacturer due to losses in Ukraine and international competition, Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten wrote on August 29.

The publication notes that Rheinmetall has been creating high-tech products in demand worldwide for decades. Deliveries of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine were presented in the West as a “turning point.” But these tanks failed to prove themselves, and information from the battlefield left a negative impression.

In addition, competitors represented by South Korean manufacturers seriously squeezed Rheinmetall on the international market. As it turned out, South Korea delivers quality machinery quickly and in large volumes. Rheinmetall has repeatedly delayed deliveries, including to Ukraine.

A representative of the German Defense Ministry said earlier that 25 German Leopard tanks were destroyed during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in June-July. All the German-made tanks that were hit, which were shown in photos and videos of the agencies and Russian military correspondents, are 2A4 and 2A6 modifications.
