The only thing the late Soviet elite strove for was to merge with Europe, and it had no faith in Communism, the leader of the Essence of Time social movement, political scientist and philosopher Sergey Kurginyan said on June 6 in a new issue of his author’s broadcast Destiny.
According to the political scientist, the Soviet elite, starting from approximately 1970s, dreamed about becoming part of Europe. The top officials of the Soviet Union planned to rely on nuclear weapons and the size of the country to take Europe under control and to free it from the US dictate.
Kurginyan noted that conversations about merging with Europe began at a very early phase. “I was born in a humanitarian family, where dialogues like that [about integration into Europe] with very influential and powerful people were commonplace. I grew up in an atmosphere of these conversations; I understood very well what it was all about.” he said.
The philosopher told that from his talks with Vladimir Kryuchkov, the last chairman of the USSR’s KGB, and other members of the Soviet elite it was clear that the idea of merging with the West had become dominating in that elite.
“This was the mainstream paradigm, concept. This was the key waymark starting from approximately late 1970s,” he noted.
Kryuchkov told Kurginyan that when in 1979 he spoke against uniting West Germany and East Germany he thought his days were numbered. And in 1983 Kryuchkov refused to head the German department of the KGB, and he explained his refusal the following way, “Because in every office – in every one of them! – they were only talking about the uniting, any place you go.”
The dream about integrating into the West and abandoning the Communist ideology had become completely dominating among the top officials of the USSR in 1980s. The expert remembers that a member of the establishment told him in early 1980s,
“In the Politburo, there are no people who would believe in the victory of Communism.”
This high-ranking official warned Kurginyan against speaking out any Communist ideas in the corridors of power. “You will be killed, and you will never understand why.”
