The first international congress of graduates from Cuba’s Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) was held with medical specialists from dozens of countries participating, TeleSUR wrote on November 15.

The congress was attended by over 300 delegates and 250 guests. The event marked the 25th anniversary of ELAM, which has been training young people from various countries to become doctors capable of strengthening their home countries’ healthcare systems.

To date, ELAM has graduated 31,180 doctors from over 120 countries. Brazilian doctor Leandro Araújo stated that efforts to create an International Medical Association have been ongoing for several years. He emphasized that the core values uniting ELAM graduates are solidarity and internationalism.

Luther Castillo Harry, one of the first students of ELAM and currently the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Honduras, supported the creation of the international association and stated that each graduate should become an “ambassador of the Cuban revolution.”

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel sent his greetings to the attendees, referring to them as “children of Cuba, born in other countries.”
