King’s College London: The USA hinders Saudi Arabia’s cooperation with China and Russia

09.11.2024, London.

The United States is attempting to limit Saudi Arabia’s growing strategic interaction with China and Russia within the BRICS framework and beyond, during discussions on a security agreement with Riyadh. This was reported by Andreas Krieg, senior lecturer at King’s College London (KCL), on November 8, as conveyed by DAWN.

Furthermore, one of the main US demands during these negotiations is the normalization of Saudi Arabia’s relations with Israel, the KCL scholar reminded.

Washington also expects Saudi Arabia to act as a counterbalance to Iranian influence in both the air and maritime spaces of the Persian Gulf, Krieg noted.

However, Saudi Arabia remains concerned about the durability of any security agreement with the USA due to the constantly changing political situation in Washington, emphasized the researcher.

The tepid US response to Iran’s 2019 attack on Saudi oil facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais led to a more restrained Saudi policy both in its confrontation with Iran and in its defense cooperation with the United States.
