Lavrov: NATO intends to engage in “defensive” battles in the Asia-Pacific Region

Statements from NATO regarding their intentions to engage in “defensive” battles in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait are absurd, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on November 4 at the international science fiction symposium Creating the Future.

According to him, it is clear to all sensible people that such actions by NATO lead nowhere.

In reality, the US wants to increase its presence in this region to pressure Russia and its allies, Lavrov noted. Moreover, he emphasized that NATO, led by Washington, is asserting “a dominant role for the alliance not only in the Euro-Atlantic but also in the Asia-Pacific region.”

According to the NATO declaration signed in July at the Washington summit, it appears that “for the protection of their members’ territories, this ‘defensive’ alliance intends to conduct these ‘defensive’ battles in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, thousands of miles from their shores,” explained the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
