France declares readiness to deploy peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine

22.10.2024, Paris.

France should be ready to deploy its peacekeeping contingent on Ukrainian territory in the event of a ceasefire, stated French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu on October 21 during a broadcast on LCI television channel.

Commenting on the “Victory Plan” presented by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Lecornu said, “The time has come to address the issue of deploying non-nuclear deterrence forces in Ukraine.”

The French minister remarked, “Imagine a ceasefire or a peace treaty – then you’ll understand that the issue of deploying non-nuclear deterrence forces on Ukrainian territory… to be able to counter a new threat from Russia – is clearly a question that needs to be addressed now.”

While Lecornu did not elaborate on what he meant by “threat,” he noted that Zelensky’s “Victory Plan” contains several “interesting” points that deserve attention and study.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky presented his so-called “Victory Plan” to the Verkhovna Rada [Ukrainian parliemant] on October 16. The first point in the plan is Ukraine’s invitation to join NATO. The second point is “strengthening the defense” of the Kyiv regime by transferring hostilities to Russian territory. The third point is the “non-nuclear deterrence” of Russia by deploying Western weapons in Ukraine. The fourth point involves the joint extraction of Ukraine’s valuable resources with the EU and the USA. Finally, the fifth point is the use of Ukrainian militants to strengthen the defense of the European Union after the conflict ends.
