Due to prolonged economic stagnation, Japan has dropped to fourth place in the ranking of the most powerful and influential countries in the Asia-Pacific region, ceding the third position to India, Kyodo News Agency wrote on October 14.
This assessment is presented in the 2024 Asia Power Index report published by the Australian think tank, Lowy Institute. Japan scored 38.9 out of a possible 100 points, which is 1.6 points higher than last year, while India’s increase of 2.8 points gave it a score of 39.1 points. The United States leads the ranking with a score of 81.7 points, followed by China with 72.7 points.
The analysis evaluates the overall power of 27 countries and territories in the region based on a weighted average across eight indicators, which include military capability, economic resources, diplomatic and cultural influence, among others.
The top 10 also includes Australia (31.9), Russia (31.1), South Korea (31.0), Singapore (26.4), and Thailand (19.8).
