Budapest calls Harris’ comments on Orban disrespectful to Hungarian people

12.10.2024, Budapest.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called the remarks made by US Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban a complete disrespect to the Hungarian people, RIA Novosti wrote on October 12.

“This is complete disrespect not only to the Prime Minister but also to the Hungarian people,” he said, commenting on Harris’ statement in which she referred to Orban, along with the leaders of China and North Korea, as “people who have been well described as murderers.”

“This kind of statement shows complete disrespect, which is unacceptable, especially in relations between allies,” emphasized the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry. “First and foremost, this is a scandal,” Szijjártó added, noting that such an approach is “definitely not the best start” for future relations between the two countries.

The remark from Harris came during an election program aired on CBS on October 9, when the host mentioned former President and new presidential candidate Donald Trump in the context of his good relations with President Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The Kremlin noted that such attacks are typical of US rhetoric.
