US negotiates ceasefire in the Middle East

09.10.2024, Moscow.

The US is negotiating a ceasefire in the Middle East with Iran and a number of Arab countries, but Israel is not taking part in the process. This was reported by Israel’s Channel 12 television on October 9.

According to Israel’s Channel 12 Television, it was reported Wednesday that the US is negotiating a ceasefire in the Middle East region with Iran and a number of Arab countries. However, Israel is not taking part in these talks, it is noted.

According to the TV station, a senior Israeli official said, “We are now in a favorable position. The ceasefire will be on our terms, including withdrawal to the northern bank of the Litani River and the dismantling of all Hezbollah military installations in the border areas.

Israel has been conducting a ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon since October 1 and continues aerial bombardments, which have already killed more than 2,000 people, including leaders of the Shiite movement. More than a million people have become refugees. Despite the casualties, Hezbollah continues fighting and rocket attacks.

On October 7, Israel was subjected to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. Hamas militants infiltrated the border areas, took over 200 hostages and opened fire on Israeli military and civilians. As a result, some 1,200 people were killed.

In response, Israel launched Operation Iron Swords in the Gaza Strip, during which it struck civilian targets. A complete blockade of the enclave was declared: supplies of water, electricity, fuel, food and medicine were cut off.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the conflict has killed nearly 42,000 people and injured more than 97,000. The Gaza Strip is effectively divided into southern and northern parts, and Israel is currently conducting a ground operation in Rafah, the last Hamas stronghold.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation urges the parties to the conflict to cease hostilities. Moscow is convinced that the settlement of the situation is possible only on the basis of the formula approved by the UN Security Council, which envisages the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
