Changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine are being made to ensure that adversaries have no illusions about Russia’s readiness to use all means to ensure its security, stated Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko in an interview with RIA Novosti on October 8.
Grushko said that the foundations of state policy in the area of nuclear deterrence are being updated to consider all factors affecting Russia’s security, defense capability, and stability.
He also highlighted that NATO is increasing the role of nuclear weapons in its strategy.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned the possible changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June 2024. According to him, the doctrine is a living document.
Russia’s Military Doctrine and the document “Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence” outline scenarios under which Russia may use nuclear weapons.
