Welt am Sonntag: NATO will create 49 new combat-ready brigades

05.10.2024, Berlin.

The North Atlantic Alliance plans to establish 49 new brigades, each consisting of 5,000 soldiers, Welt am Sonntag wrote on October 5.

NATO aims to ultimately have 131 combat-ready brigades. Russia has been declared the greatest threat to NATO members, necessitating an increase in military strength to counter this threat.

As recently as 2021, it was believed that 82 combat brigades would suffice for the alliance. NATO now plans to increase the number of combat corps from 6 to 15 and the number of division headquarters from 24 to 38.

The number of air defense systems is expected to increase nearly fivefold, from 293 to 1,467, including systems such as Patriot, IRIS T-SLM, and Skyranger.

The responsibilities for expanding military capabilities will be distributed among all NATO member states before the meeting of defense ministers in October 2025.
