Turkey and Iraq sign agreement on the return of Iraqi citizens

03.10.2024, Ankara.

Ankara and Baghdad have signed a memorandum of understanding for the voluntary return of Iraqi citizens from Turkey to Iraq, Hürriyet Daily News reported on October 3.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya and Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displacement Evan Faeq Jabro signed the agreement. The initiative aims to enhance cooperation in migration management.

“As part of the memorandum of understanding, cooperation will be carried out to effectively prevent illegal and irregular migration,” stated the Turkish Interior Ministry.

Since September 1, 2024, Turkey simplified entry requirements for Iraqi citizens under the age of 15 and over the age of 50. The Turkish opposition immediately protested, stating that “Iraq is one of the countries sending the most illegal migrants to Turkey.”
