Moscow will deliver humanitarian aid to Lebanon on Thursday, October 3, Russian Ambassador to Beirut Alexander Rudakov told reporters at the Valdai Discussion Club on October 2.
According to Rudakov, an Emergencies Ministry flight will arrive tomorrow to bring humanitarian aid from Russia.
Rudakov also noted that Lebanon is in a difficult situation: the social and economic crisis in the country has lingered for five years, the president’s chair has been empty for almost two years, and the entire executive authority is working with a limited capacity.
In addition, there are many Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, the effects of the escalation between the Gaza Strip and Israel, which began in October 2023, are also having an impact.
“It will get even worse. Already for more than a week, Israel has been conducting its airstrikes on Lebanese territory. At first in Beirut, we tried to keep a tally of how many times they hit southern, traditionally Shiite areas. Now we have lost count,” the ambassador said.
According to the ambassador, “the boiling point has long been passed,” so there are two prospects in the region – either a ceasefire, talks and a diplomatic solution, or further development of Israel’s ground operation in Lebanon and a full-scale protracted major war in the region.
He added that in terms of scale, the conflict has become more severe and deadly than the 2006 Lebanese-Israeli war.
Earlier, Lebanese Ambassador to Moscow Shawki Bou Nassar said that the Russian side had notified the Lebanese side of plans to send to Lebanon a plane of the Ministry of Emergency Situations with a cargo of humanitarian aid.
Israel launched massive strikes on the infrastructure of the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. The bombing killed its leader Sheikh Nasrallah.
