BRICS countries agree to jointly develop AI

28.09.2024, Moscow.

The BRICS countries will enhance cooperation in developing digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum technologies, stated Russia’s Minister of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media Maksut Shadaev on September 27 during a press conference following a meeting with BRICS communication ministers.

“We discussed three areas of cooperation, which have been identified as priorities. These include the development of digital infrastructure,” said Shadaev.

According to the minister, the primary focus is on expanding Internet access. He noted that satellite technologies will be developed for this purpose, as laying optical lines is “not always economically efficient.”

The minister also emphasized the critical importance of AI, stating that countries lacking this technology will be significantly restricted in their development pace.

The third focus area is quantum computing, which Shadaev noted is slightly more promising from a practical standpoint. Collaboration in this area will also be developed, he added.
