Google restricted the creation of new accounts for Russian users, the Russian Ministry of Digital Development (Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media) informed on September 26.
“The Ministry confirms that Google has restricted the creation of new accounts. Telecom operators have also recorded a significant reduction in the number of SMS messages sent by the company to Russian users,” the statement reads.
It was noted that SMS messages for two-factor authentication still work for accounts that were created earlier. However, the ministry cannot guarantee that the company’s services will continue to work for Russian users in the future.
The ministry recommended making backup copies of data and changing the second authentication factor if SMS messages are used. They also advised considering switching to Russian platforms instead of Google services.
