Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted a treaty on the development of military-technical cooperation between Russia and South Ossetia to the Russian State Duma for ratification. The draft law was published in the parliament database on September 19.

“The treaty is aimed at deepening cooperation in the military-technical sphere,” reads the explanatory note of the document.

The signing of the treaty took place on August 23, 2023 in Tskhinvali. Ratification of the document is required based on Article 15 of the Federal Law “On International Treaties of the Russian Federation.”

Russia and South Ossetia signed their first defense security agreement on September 15, 2009. It was based on the Treaty of Friendship, cooperation, and mutual assistance signed by the countries on September 17, 2008.

South Ossetian Deputy Defense Minister Vadim Siukaev noted on September 13, 2024 that the treaties with Russia in the military sphere meet the interests of both countries. They also have a positive impact on preserving a stable situation in the Caucasus and halting plans of Western countries for the region.
