22.08.2024, Moscow.

The development of cooperation between Russia and China in space is reflected in the joint communiqué of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, the text published on the official website of the Russian government on August 22.

The parties agreed to promote the establishment of the International Scientific Lunar Station and coordinate efforts to explore the Moon.

They also agreed to promote cooperation between Roscosmos Corporation and the Chinese National Space Administration. The issue of ensuring compatibility and complementarity of the Russian GLONAS and Chinese Beidou satellite navigation systems was highlighted separately.

Earlier, Russia and China agreed to create a research complex on the surface of the Moon by 2036. The United States has begun development of an alternative program for lunar exploration – Artemis.

Russia currently uses 29 satellites for navigation (including 5 backup satellites), while China uses 49 satellites of different generations (including 5 backup satellites). Complementarity will improve reliability in case of malfunction of segments of one of the systems, as well as the accuracy of coordinate determination.

For comparison, the GPS satellite constellation has 32 satellites (including 1 decommissioned).
