Russian president’s aide Patrushev: Russia leads in the Arctic

16.08.2024, Moscow.

Russia’s potential in the Arctic is ahead of the US and other countries, said presidential aide Nikolay Patrushev in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper on August 15.

“Russia supports the peaceful development in the Arctic. At the same time, it is time for Western countries to understand that in terms of its Arctic potential (both military and civilian), Russia is far ahead of not only the US but all the Arctic states combined,” Patrushev emphasized.

Patrushev, who oversees national maritime policy, emphasized the importance of developing the Northern Sea Route as a safe year-round transport link. He also noted that improving port infrastructure and increasing the carrying capacity of railways in the northern latitudes plays an important role. Additionally, Patrushev identified the development of the Arctic as a strategic task.

The presidential aide also spoke about the establishment of a Council for the Protection of Russia’s National Interests in the Arctic within the Russian Maritime Board, which will be involved in regional research, the socio-economic development of Arctic territories, and the development of natural resources in the exclusive economic zone and on the Arctic continental shelf.
