Valery Zaluzhny, the then-Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, ordered to blow up the Nord Streams in September 2022 against the instructions of the CIA and the later orders of Vladimir Zelensky, according to data from American, European, and Ukrainian sources, reported The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on August 14.
According to the WSJ, private businessmen financed the operation, which a top general oversaw. President Zelensky approved the plan and then unsuccessfully tried to cancel it.
According to the publication, Zelensky initially approved the terrorist attack, and Zaluzhny was responsible for its organization. All orders were given orally to leave no evidence. However, later, the CIA demanded that the sabotage not be carried out.
The article’s authors stated that Zelensky informed Zaluzhny about the US reaction, but he violated the order and continued preparations for the terrorist attack. He also made changes to the original plan and involved Colonel Roman Chervinsky from the special operations forces.
Zaluzhny told the newspaper that he knows nothing about the preparations for the Nord Streams’ explosion. He noted that the Ukrainian armed units do not have the authority to conduct foreign missions.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the information published by Western media, including WSJ, that a group of Ukrainians blew up the Nord Streams, “nonsense.” He pointed out that such explosions can only be carried out by professionals and only with the full support of the state.
