Central African Republic is about to sign arms deal with Russia

12.08.2024, Moscow.

The Central African Republic (CAR) authorities plan to sign an agreement with Russia regarding arms supply and military cooperation, the country’s Defense Ministry Claude Rameaux Bireau told RIA Novosti on August 12.

“I came here, among other things, to sign an agreement with the Russian government regarding military supplies, military training, and other areas,” said the minister.

Bireau referred to Russian research results in military technologies as the pinnacle of development, noting that they surpass the research in civilian spheres.

At the end of July, the UN Security Council lifted the ban on arms supplies to the Central African Republic, which had been in effect since 2013. France initiated the corresponding document, which was adopted unanimously.

The embargo on arms supplies to the Central African Republic was introduced against the backdrop of chaos and continuing fighting in the country. Clashes began due to a religious conflict provoked by the Islamist movement Seleka, which was committing mass atrocities against Christians. In response, the Christian Anti-Balaka movement emerged, responsible for terror against Muslims.

In 2016, Faustin-Archange Touadéra took over the Central African Republic as a president after a number of changes at this post. Having failed to improve the situation in the country with the help of France, he turned the course towards partnership with Russia and China. In 2017, Touadéra met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and in 2018, with President Vladimir Putin.

From 2018 to 2024, Russia assisted the country’s authorities in taking control of almost its entire territory. The country’s leadership has repeatedly noted that Russian military instructors, who trained 10,000 servicemen, have provided huge support to that.
