Political scientist explains why Japan does not criticize the USA for atomic bombings

09.08.2024, Nagasaki.

Japan cannot criticize the US for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it is entirely dependent on Washington, said Masato Kamikubo, a professor at Ritsumeikan University, on August 9, according to RIA Novosti.

He reminded that since the end of World War II, Tokyo has been under the control of Washington, especially in matters of security.

“Japan is protected by the so-called US nuclear umbrella. Therefore, Japan cannot openly criticize the USA for the atomic bombings,” the expert emphasized.

Kamikubo noted that Japan is forced to adhere to the US view of history. In particular, it must support the US version that it surrendered due to the nuclear strikes, not because of the Soviet landing on Sakhalin.

The expert stressed that even opposition parties opposed to the USA cannot actively criticize Washington for the atomic bombings or make claims on this issue.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, in his speech in Nagasaki at the memorial ceremony on the anniversary of the bombing, did not mention the role of the USA in the tragedy.
