Mexican President Lopez Obrador has refused to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he comes to Mexico for his inauguration. Mexican newspaper laJornada wrote this on 8 August.

“We can’t do that, it’s not in our competence,” President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said at a regular government press conference, answering a relevant question from a journalist.

The acting president went on to add that Mexico is “against wars” and that Russia and Ukraine offered an internationally mediated agreement.

Lopez Obrador pointed out to reporters that he has repeatedly raised the issue of setting up a commission comprising Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres to negotiate between both sides of the conflict.

Earlier, Mexico formally invited Putin to attend the inauguration of Mexico’s president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum on October 1.

According to Reuters on 7 August, the Mexican embassy in Ukraine received a statement requesting the arrest of the Russian President and pointing to the arrest warrant issued by the UN International Criminal Court (ICC). In the statement, Kiev expressed confidence that the Mexican government would fulfil the request.

In turn, Reuters noted that Sheinbaum’s team sent an invitation to all countries with which Mexico maintains diplomatic relations.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for the Russian President in 2023. At the same time, Mexico is a member of the ICC, while Russia is not.
