German actor Peter Kurth said in an interview with Neue Zürcher Zeitung on August 1 that Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz’s statement about East Germany makes him sick.
“If Mr. Merz stands up today and says: ‘We should have explained this to the “Ossis” better,’ it makes me nauseous,” said Kurth.
The actor called the period after the reunification of Germany a “catastrophic upheaval” for the residents of East Germany. He noted that initially, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, people had “faith in the future,” but soon the spirit of optimism disappeared.
Kurth stated that reunification quickly turned into a “catastrophic takeover.” He believes that the consequences of this are still felt in East Germany.
