Decision to deploy US missiles in Germany will be made without discussions in Bundestag

02.08.2024, Berlin.

The deployment of US long-range weapon systems in Germany, scheduled for 2026, may occur within the framework of the NATO alliance, meaning no decisions at the Bundestag level will be necessary, reports the German news portal Berlin 24/7, citing the scientific service of a state body.

According to the portal, the legal basis on which the German government can give its consent without the participation of the legislative branch will likely be the NATO Treaty and the NATO Status of Forces Agreement, which regulates the legal status of foreign armed forces in Germany, in combination with other previously adopted laws.

It is reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed concerns that the planned deployment could lead to an escalation of the conflict with Russia, as he believes that the deployed weapons will serve as a deterrent.

However, several German politicians have expressed concern about this. For instance, former SPD chairman Norbert Walter-Borjans believes that such a decision must be discussed in the Bundestag, while Johann Wadephul, deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, though positive about the deployment of US missiles in Germany, also called for debates in the Bundestag.
