Indonesian Foreign Ministry: Indonesia supports signing of Beijing Declaration

Indonesia supports the signing of the Beijing Declaration by several factions fighting for Palestinian independence as a first step toward national reconciliation and unity in Palestine, ANTARA quoted Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi as saying on July 24.

Marsudi, during the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, emphasized the importance of maintaining the unity of the Palestinian nation amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.

“Indonesia expects that everything agreed upon will be implemented,” she said in a written statement.

She noted that Indonesia has always raised the issue of reconciliation and unity in its meetings with Palestinian factions.

“Unity is the key to achieving peace and a future for Palestine,” she said.

At least 14 Palestinian factions, including Fatah and Hamas, agreed to sign the Beijing Declaration to end the division and strengthen Palestinian unity. The agreement was signed following talks in the Chinese capital Beijing on July 21-23, 2024.

According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Palestinian factions agreed to set up an interim government of national reconciliation to focus on post-war governance in Gaza.

“The main conclusion is to make it clear that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is the sole legitimate representative of the entire Palestinian people,” Wang Yi said.

While reconciliation was an internal Palestinian affair, it could not be achieved without international support. He also reiterated that China supports most Arab and Muslim countries in the Palestinian issue.

Senior Hamas official Musa Abu Marzouk also said that the future path for the Palestinian people is through national unity.

“We are committed to national unity and call for it,” he emphasized.
