Russian fighter jets drive away B-52H bombers over the Barents Sea

MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighter jets were raised in the air to prevent US B-52H bombers from violating Russia’s border over the Barents Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said on July 21.

Russian navy airspace control means of the Barents Sea detected a group air target approaching the state border of the Russian Federation,” the report said. MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighter jets from the on-duty air defense forces were dispatched to identify the targets and prevent them from violating the Russian state border.

The targets were identified as two B-52H strategic bombers belonging to the US Air Force. The Russian Defense Ministry reports that as the Russian fighters approached, the US bombers turned away from the Russian state border.

The publication emphasizes that the flight of Russian aircraft strictly complied with international laws in the field of flights over neutral waters, all prescribed safety measures were observed.

On March 25, over the Barents Sea, a MiG-31 fighter-interceptor prevented a pair of US B-1B strategic bombers from violating the state border. The US Air Force described the actions of the Russian aircraft as safe and professional.
