Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Interim Government of National Unity of Libya Taher Al-Baur, the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry informed on July 17.
The meeting was held within the framework of the UN Security Council’s open debate on multilateral cooperation for a more just, democratic and sustainable world order.
During the exchange of views on the current situation in Libya, the Russian side stressed its unwavering commitment to further assistance to the sustainable stabilization of the situation in the country. The importance of ensuring an inclusive national dialogue aimed at preserving the territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty of the Libyan State was emphasized. In that context, hope was expressed for the achievement of a broad inter-Libyan agreement, which is necessary for the successful resolution of the tasks of the transitional period, including preparations for the holding of national elections.
On June 1, 2024, a high-ranking Russian government delegation headed by the Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Colonel General Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, arrived at Benin International Airport in the Libyan city of Benghazi. The Russian delegation was met at the airport by representatives of Libya’s alternative government and representatives of the Libyan National Army (LNA) command.
