The number of applications for service in the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) has increased, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, Deutschlandfunk radio station informed on July 18.

According to the defense minister, the Bundeswehr has seen an increase in service applications. By July 8, the number of applications had increased by 15% compared to the previous year. Pistorius is reportedly planning several working visits to learn more about the work of the Air Force.

The minister’s visit is expected to take place in Büchel in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the future, F-35 fighter jets will be stationed there to replace the Tornado fighters. The minister will then travel to Uedem in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the Bundeswehr Space Command, which is responsible for protecting and monitoring satellites, military intelligence and monitoring dangerous space debris, is based.

Earlier, Spiegel magazine reported that in a letter to the soldiers, Pistorius expressed his disappointment with the ruling coalition’s budget planning. The result was not as expected.

Pistorius vowed to continue fighting for an increase in the defense budget in the coming years so that the Bundeswehr’s needs are met as quickly as possible. Germany’s defense minister has stated a need of € 58 billion for 2025. The draft budget approved by the cabinet only provides for about €53 billion.
