MEPs propose stripping Hungary of its voting rights in the EU

16.07.2024, Brussels.

Members of the European Parliament proposed to strip Hungary of its voting rights in the EU after its Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s visit to Moscow, Politico wrote on July 16.

According to the deputies, Orban misrepresented his credentials during his visits to Moscow and Beijing and meetings with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. In response, the EU should take real action, such as stripping Hungary of its voting rights in the Council.

Sixty-three MEPs signed the corresponding letter. They believe Orban should not have mentioned Hungary’s status as EU presidency during his peace mission.

Orban’s position on the settlement of the conflict is not the position of the European Union, the letter reads.

As part of his peace mission, Viktor Orban visited Kiev, Moscow, Beijing and Washington. In the US capital he took part in the NATO summit.
