Spain sends 10 more Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine

15.07.2024, Madrid.

The Spanish authorities sent ten Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine, the Spanish Defense Ministry announced on July 15.

“Spain has started to transfer another batch of combat equipment to Ukraine. The shipment includes ten Leopard 2A4 tanks, several old excavators and anti-tank missiles,” the statement reads.

According to the defense ministry, the tanks underwent repairs at the Alcala de Guadaira plant in Seville. Tests were also conducted there, and the tanks were recognized as fully ready for use.

The tanks have already left Spain and traveled by sea to Poland. They are expected to arrive in one of the Polish ports by the end of this week and be transported through Polish territory to Ukraine.

“With this shipment, Spain has already transferred 20 Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine. Another shipment is expected during the second half of 2024,” the Spanish Defense Ministry said.

Earlier, the Spanish media reported that the repair of each tank costs more than half a million euros. In total, 53 tanks were in storage in Zaragoza.

In March 2024, it became known that Spain was preparing a new batch of tanks for Ukraine. The Spanish Ministry of Defense announced that about 20 inactive tanks would be repaired and subsequently transferred to the Ukrainian armed units. By supplying old tanks to Ukraine, Madrid is updating the tank fleet at the expense of new deliveries.
