China imposes sanctions on Lockheed Martin

21.06.2024, Beijing.

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) imposed sanctions against US arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin over arms supplies to Taiwan, the press service of the Chinese Foreign Ministry informed on June 21.

The statement said the sanctions are imposed in response to arms deliveries to the Taiwan region of China. Such actions, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement, violate the “one China” principle and the three joint Sino-US communiqués, are interference in internal affairs and infringe on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The imposed sanctions are a countermeasure against relevant departments and senior management of Lockheed Martin.

China announced sanctions against Lockheed Martin Missile System Integration Lab, Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories, Lockheed Martin Ventures. In addition, sanctions were imposed on individuals such as Lockheed Martin CEO James Taiclet, COO Frank St. John, CFO Jesus Malave.

The assets of these companies and employees within China will be frozen. All persons listed in the ruling are banned from entering the country, and no entry visas will be issued.

Cooperation and other activities with companies and individuals on the sanctions list are prohibited in China.

The US authorities were the first to aggravate the situation because of Taiwan. This was facilitated by the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives to Taiwan in August 2022. At that time, this post was held by Nancy Pelosi. The visit took place despite the protest of the People’s Republic of China.

Taiwan emerged in 1949 as a result of the civil war in China. The military units of the Kuomintang Party, led by Chiang Kai-shek, who opposed the Chinese Communist Party, fled to the island.

In the late 1980s, after Chiang Kaishi’s death, relations between the island and mainland China resumed.
