Russian Permanent Representative to UN: Western strikes on Yemen spin escalation in Red Sea

13.06.2024, New York.

Western strikes on Yemen are fueling escalation in the Red Sea, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said on June 13 at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Yemen.

He said that the actions of the coalition led by the United States and UK against Yemen are unlawful and only unwind the spiral of escalation in the Red Sea.

“Such illegitimate military intervention cannot be justified either by UNSC Resolution 2722 or by references to the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter,” Nebenzya said.

Nebenzya emphasized that “comprehensive political and diplomatic efforts, rather than the aggressive strikes typical of the West, are needed to improve the situation both inside Yemen and in the nearby waters.” “First of all, it is necessary to achieve an early cessation of violence in the Gaza Strip,” he added.

On May 31, as a result of a missile strike on the Yemeni province of Hodeidah killed 16 people, wounded 35.

Earlier, the Yemeni movement “Ansar Allah” (Houthis) said that it would attack the territory of Israel and would not allow its ships to pass through the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the operation in Palestine stopped.
